4th Grade Science with Mrs. Portzen

This year the students will work their way through several FOSS science kits including Physics of Sound, the Human Body, and Magnetism and Electricity.  These kits provide the students with opportunities to investigate and learn about various science topics through hands-on learning.  During the week, we do experiments, discuss our findings, take notes, read science stories, and review key words and content.  Students keep a science notebook to record these notes, their observations from experiments, and written responses.  They are young scientists!

Physics of Sound
In our first kit, Physics of Sound, the students are learning all about sound.  So far they have learned about sound discrimination, vibrations, pitch, frequency, volume, and how sound travels.  They seem to enjoy these new science topics!

Human Body
In our second unit, the students will be learning about bones, joints, and muscles.  They will discover how these body parts work together to make our skeleton move and provide us with coordination.  Among their investigations, students will count bones, try to do tasks without a joint, and explore how muscles cause our bones to move.   Students are most excited to observe the contents of owl pellets, during which students will be finding similarities between animal and human skeletons.
